Gartelmann Wines Review
Gartelmann is a boutique, family owned cellar door and wine producer based in the very popular Lovedale area of the Hunter Valley Vineyards. They specialise in fine hand-crafted wines using grapes sourced from the Lower and Upper Hunter Valley, Mudgee, Rylstone, and Orange regions of NSW.
Also located on the property is the Deck Cafe restaurant, open 7 days for breakfast and lunch. This is a very popular stop over for many visiting the area and we hope to have an opportunity to visit here some time in the future for lunch and do a review.
Our visit was mid morning on a Tuesday so there were not many other visitors, except for a few people at the Deck Cafe to grab a coffee or early lunch. It was nice to have the cellar door to ourselves as it gave us the opportunity to have some quality wine tasting time. The weekends we expect would be a different story.
Sue our host was excellent and provided us with very personal, and informative, service. Their wines consist of multi-award winning Semillon and Shiraz through to their aromatic Verdelho, elegant Chardonnay, soft Merlot, delicious Cabernet and complex Petit Verdot. They also carry a dessert Ambrosia and Liqueur Muscat, packaged in a very elegant bottle.
Many of the wines are named after children of the Gartelmann family which to us highlights the locally family owned business element. A nice touch given the influx of larger overseas companies now buying many of the surrounding vineyards.
Our take home purchase on the day was the Sarah Elizabeth Chardonary.
The setting at Gartelmann is very pleasant, nestled in a rural setting the cellar door and Deck Cafe overlook a large dam. Wine tasting can be done in the cellar door or choose to have your tasting on the family friendly covered deck overlooking the dam. It was a very hot day on the day of our visit so we did not get the opportunity to experience the tasting deck due to the heat. Because of the heat we also did not get a change to wander the grounds as much as we would have liked.
There are a number of building artworks by local artist Yvonne Moyes scattered about the property, one on the face of the toilet block a quirky highlight.
Gartelmann is a regular participant in the annual Lovedale Long Lunch. A two day event held in May each year, it attracts thousand of visitors, both locals and tourists, many making the pilgrimage from Sydney every year. Gartelmann is a favourite stop over for many doing this event due to it's great reputation.
If you are in the Lovedale area while exploring the Vineyards be sure to drop into Gartelmann. Based on our experience, you should not be disappointed. The setting here is lovely, the service very personal, and you are sure to find a wine that suits your tastes. Once you have completed your wine tasting wander over from the cellar door to the Deck Cafe and have a coffee, or lunch and a Gartelmann wine.
