Undercliff Winery Review

Destination: The Vineyards

Topic: Undercliff Winery - Sculpture in the vineyards 2016

We visited this small cellar door and winery as part of the Sculpture in the Vineyards event held each year around the the historic Wollombi Village area. Undercliff is tucked away in a very pleasant valley just a short distance, 1.5 kilometres,  from the centre of Wollombi. Just a couple 100m's down from the Wollombi Tavern on the Paynes Crossing Road you will see a turn off to your left, Yango Creek Road. It is a dirt road that offers a nice drive up the valley until you get to the winery.

If you are looking for a break from the typically 'commercial' type cellar door, than Undercliff is for you. The surroundings here are a just superb. Very tranquil and a walk around the vineyards inspecting the sculpture installations was very relaxing.

The cellar door and wine tasting is relaxed and intimate. Peter, owner and operator, looked after us in a very casual but professional manner. He shared with us the history behind the vineyard, their wine making, and introduced us to some very nice wines, which we had no hesitation in buying and taking home with us.

You can sample award winning Hunter Valley wines whilst browsing the gallery, gift shop, and local produce at the cellar door.

Undercliff was proclaimed and settled as a farm in 1846 and still retains the original timber slab sheds and homestead. The vineyard was established in 1990 with Semillon and Shiraz varieties that thrive in the rich alluvial soils. An olive gove was also established. More recently other grape varieties have been planted such as Chambourcin, Chardonnay and Muscat. They are well know for their artistic bird labels.

The picturesque vineyard and surrounding open parkland spaces of Undercliff  provide a popular venue for special events and weddings.  Undercliff also offers B&B accommodation at the Settlers Cottage, a unique rustic cottage built in 1847. This slab cottage is the original homestead for the Undercliff Estate. The cottage is set on a hillside overlooking the vineyard and olive grove with its many varieties of birds and spectacular scenery.

In Summary:

If you are visiting the cellar doors and wineries whilst in Wollombi, this is a must. We highly recommend a visit here. The tranquil setting and relaxed mode of the cellar door and surrounding vineyard was a pleasant change. The quality of the wines that Undercliff produces is also a added bonus.
